My 6 year old has really taken a liking to Nutella lately, so I made these Nutella Banana Bread Oatmeal Muffins with him in mind. And, I must say that they are pretty delicious! Chocolate, hazelnuts and banana all go together really well and they’re even better baked with oats.
I know I just posted an oatmeal cup recipe last week, but my husband has been requesting to take them for breakfast each morning so I thought I would try out a new flavor!
Nutella Banana Bread Muffin Recipe Ingredients
- Bananas – I use two large bananas for this recipe. The riper the bananas, the sweeter they will be and the easier they will be to mash.
- Nutella – My oldest son loves Nutella and it just happens to go really well with bananas. You only need about 1 teaspoon of nutella for each banana oatmeal muffin. You can also use a dairy free nutella alternative, if needed.
- Plant Based Milk – You can use any kind of milk you like. I’ve been loving the Silk Soy Milk that has 7 grams of protein per serving. Almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk or even dairy milk will work.
- Maple Syrup – You want to use pure maple syrup, rather than pancake syrup. You can also use honey, agave syrup or date syrup if you want.
- Coconut Sugar – You can use coconut sugar, brown sugar or even granulated sugar.
- Old Fashioned Oats – Oats are nutritious and a great way to start the day! Old fashioned oats are the best for this recipe, but you can experiment using quick cooking oats or steel cut oats if you like.
- Flaxseed – Flaxseed adds nutrition, as well as helping to bind all the ingredients together, like an egg would. You can repace the flax with an egg, if you like. You could also add some chia seeds or even hemp hearts for extra nutrients.

How To Make Easy Banana Bread Oatmeal Muffins with Nutella
- To a large bowl, add the bananas and mash them well with a fork. Next, add in the milk, maple syrup, coconut sugar, flax seed and vanilla extract. Whisk everything together until combined and then add in the oats, cinnamon, baking powder and salt. Mix again and then let sit for about 10 minutes, until oats have soaked up some of the liquid.
- Grease a muffin pan well and then use a 1/4 cup scoop to scoop the oatmeal batter into the muffin tin. A heaping 1/4 cup should use up all the batter when added to all 12 spots of the muffin in.
- Top each muffin cup with about one teaspoon of nutella. I like to use a toothpick to swirl the nutella around a bit and lightly press it into the oatmeal mixture. Place oatmeal cups in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes until firm to the touch and cooked through. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the muffin pan for about 10 minutes, before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. If you have greased your muffin tin well, they should be pretty easy to get out. I usually just use a knife to help loosen them up.

Is there a substitute for flaxseed or can it ommited?
Can coconut suggar be replaced with granulated or brown sugar?

Hi Paula, Yes, you can omit the flaxseed. It does help a little bit with binding everything together, like an egg would, but it’s mostly just in there for nutritional purposes. Brown sugar would be the best substitute for the coconut sugar!

What temperature should this be cooked at? It wasn’t noted in the recipe.

I apologize for that! 375 degrees F
