I hope you all have a fun and safe 4th of July!
What Are Smash Burgers?
A smash burger is basically just a burger that is smashed while cooking, in order to create a thinner, crispier patty. They are usually served on a burger with two of the smashed patties and a slice or two of cheese melted between them.
These Black Bean Smash Burgers are my version of a vegetarian smash burger. They’re made using a black bean and quinoa mixture, so they don’t quite get as crispy as a regular, beef patty. But, they’re delicious and fun to eat!
Black Bean Smash Burger Recipe Ingredients
- Quinoa – My black bean burger recipe calls for cooked quinoa. You can use the cooked quinoa warm or chilled. Brown rice could be substituted for the quinoa, if desired.
- Black Beans – I used one can of black beans for this recipe. These are black bean burgers, but most other types of beans will work, if you don’t want to use black beans.
- Bread Crumbs – I used panko, but you can also use regular bread crumbs or even crushed up crackers.
- Salsa – I like to use a chunky salsa recipe for these burgers. I usually use a chunky black bean and corn salsa because it adds a few more elements.
- Spices – These burgers are seasoned with cumin, onion powder, garlic powder and paprika. Feel free to go as heavy on the seasonings as you like.
- Cheese – I just used a slice of cheddar cheese. You can use however much cheese you like, as well as whatever kind you prefer.
- Hamburger Buns – Use your favorite hamburger buns. You could also use two crunchy pieces of lettuce if you want to lower the amount of carbs.
- Toppings – I topped my burgers with ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles and avocado. Use whatever you like!
How To Make Black Bean Smash Burgers
- To a food processor, add your cooked quinoa, black beans, bread crumbs, salsa, spices and salt. Blend until a partly chunky, partly smooth mixture is formed. If it’s too much of a paste, the burgers will be on the mushier side. You do want it to be able to hold together well though.
- Add burger mixture to a medium sized bowl and make sure everything is mixed together well. You can chill your burger mixture for up to 4 days, or make your patties right away. This recipe should make enough for about 8 thin patties, making 4 burgers total.
- Form the burger mixture into your 8 thin patties. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a couple teaspoons of olive oil. Once hot, place burger patties into the pan and use a spatula to really press them down. Cook until each side is browned and crispy, 5-7 minutes each side. Melt a slice of cheese onto 4 of the patties.
- Assemble your burgers: lay down your bottom piece of bun and top with any toppings you desire. Next, carefully place the patty with the melted cheese down and then top with a second burger patty. Top with any other toppings you like and place the second piece of bun on the top.
Black Bean Veggie Burger Recipe Frequently Asked Questions
- Are these veggie burgers gluten free? No, I used regular bread crumbs and a regular bun for my burgers, but you can easily make them gluten free by using gluten free ingredients.
- Are these smash burgers vegan? The burger patty itself is vegan, but the cheese I used on my burger is not. You can easily use vegan cheese in this recipe though.
- What is the texture of the black bean burgers? Their texture is more on the soft side, but they are not dry and crumbly. If you want the patties to be super crispy, fry in a tablespoon or so of oil until each side is crispy.
- How long do leftovers last in the refrigerator? The black bean burger mixture will last about 4-5 days in the refrigerator. It can also be frozen for up to 3 months.
