I really, really love chips.  In fact, that might be an understatement, the truth is that I’m a chip fanatic and I can’t be trusted in a room alone with a bag of chips.  I actually think it has crossed over into the realm of chip addiction.  No matter what kind of chips, as long as they are crunchy and salty I will devour them, so you better get your own bag.  I can’t count the number of times my husband has said to me, “Are all the chips really gone?  Didn’t we just buy that bag yesterday?”.  Opps!  But, thankfully I can feel good about eating lots of these Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos

Growing up, my mother was pretty deep into health food and while I got my fill of corn chips and salsa, we never kept a stock of exciting chips in the house, like sour cream and onion potato chips or nacho cheese Doritos.  It’s not that I was denied them completely, but when I did get them it was considered a treat.

Healthy Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos

My version of Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos are made with corn tortillas, olive oil and lots of flavorful spices!  I also use nutritional yeast to give them a nice cheesy flavor but also keeping them vegan.  These chips are also baked in the oven and don’t require much oil at all.

Spices used for Homemade Cool Ranch Dorito recipe

These days I survive mostly on corn chips dipped in guacamole or salsa, but today I was really craving some good old fashioned Doritos.  While I do love a classic Nacho Cheese Dorito, spring is in the air and I wanted something with a little more zing to it, so I decided on Cool Ranch Doritos.  I convinced myself that if i made them at home, from scratch, it would be ok for me to eat all of them without feeling any guilt.

Description

These Homemade Cool Ranch Doritos are made with healthy ingredients so you can feel good about feeding them to your kids!

Ingredients

  • 8 corn tortillas
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons olive oil, or canola oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon nutritional yeast
  • 3/4 teaspoons paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried chives
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. Brush both sides of each tortilla with olive oil and then cut into sixths. Spread tortilla chips out on a large baking sheet and back for about 12 minutes, flipping once. You may have to bake in two batches if you have a smaller baking sheet.
  2. Mix all spices together in a small bowl. Once tortilla chips are finished baking, place them in a large paper bag or plastic tupperware. Add the seasoning mix and shake until all chips are coated. Enjoy!

Notes

*You may have to brush some additional olive oil over the chips once they are finished baking to ensure that the seasoning mix sticks to them.

Recipe makes enough chips for 2-3 people, recipe is easily doubled or tripled if desired.

When I eat chips, I do this thing that drives my husband crazy.  I look into the bag and inspect each chip to make sure I am getting one with lots of seasoning on it.  Does anyone else ever do that or am I completely weird?!  I think I just found the best chip!

Thanks, Cindy!! I never made homemade chips until recently when I figured out how easy they are and how much cheaper it is to make your own! Now I make them all the time, which may or may not be a good thing 🙂

YES! For my cooking classes (which I wish I could teach with you!) I have been using a plain corn tortilla chip recipe (whole grains, healthy snacking, reducing sodium, saving money, etc.) and people love those chips…but these will be even more of a hit!!

That would be so fun to teach a cooking class together! Remember that time we recorded ourselves making a noodle dish at your dad’s house and it ended up being so bland? haha, I think we forgot the salt! I was thinking about you when I made these chips because I feel like we both used to gobble down the doritos when we got the chance! I hope they like these!

hey I just had a quick question. Is there a particular reason you didn’t coat the chips with the seasoning BEFORE putting them into the oven? I’m just curious…

      April 11, 2014 at 8:24 pm

Hi Shanna! That’s a good question, I think the main reason I did it that way was because other flavored chip recipes I had looked at put the seasoning on after the chips were baked. Maybe it is the same mindset as when you deep fry something you season it afterwards so the seasoning sticks to the hot oil. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work to season them before you put them in the oven though.

What is nutritional Yeast, is it different that bread making yeast? Where would I find something like that?

      July 22, 2014 at 1:49 am

Hi Brianne! Yes, nutritional yeast is different from the yeast you use to make bread. It is an inactive yeast that is yellow and comes in flakes. It is a really good source of Vitamin B-12 and a lot of people who are vegan use it because it has a flavor that is similar to cheese. I’m not sure if all grocery stores sell it, but you will definitely be able to find it at a natural foods store. They usually sell it in bags or in the bulk section. It’s not too uncommon so you shouldn’t have much trouble finding it!

Another “chip inspector” here. LOL 😀 Except I don’t just look for the ones with the most seasoning but also puffiness and shape. And, it extends to almost any packaged snack. My SO is actually REALLY patient and tolerant about it (I don’t know HOW; it would drive me NUTS), but, it’s just easier for us to have our own bags OR let me pick out my chips (and such) first and let him have my “rejects”. LOL

SUPER excited to try these. I grew up in a VERY healty household, as well, but my mom would let us get one “treat” a week, and I almost ALWAYS got Cool Ranch Doritos. 😀

Haha! I’m so glad I’m not the only crazy person that looks at every single chip! Puffiness and shape is very important too! And you never want to get a broke chip either! I need my husband to take a lesson from you SO! Although I think he is pretty used to it after seven years, hopefully! Getting my own bag is a great idea! And maybe I need to eat it in another room too, haha! My husband brought home some cool ranch doritos the other day and I snuck one and then I couldn’t stop! I guess it is best we don’t ever have them in the house! I hope you love these homemade ones and thank you so much for your comment, Liz!! 🙂

I’ve been trying to keep all the artificial food colorings out of the house, but my daughter LOVES Cool Ranch Doritos (they have dye in them). I’m so thrilled that I can finally give her the chips that she loves without all the bad ingredients. 🙂

Could I sprinkle the uncooked chips with the spices before cooking so they would cling better to the chips, or would this be yucky?

Hi Michelle, You could do that, but the spices will get a cooked a little bit and change their flavor slightly. You could also try spraying the cooked chips with a little bit more olive oil so the spices stick a little better 🙂

    Hello!

I had such high expectations for this recipe.. fresh out of the oven they tasted pretty good. I put them in a bag for enjoyment later. When I retried one a couple hours later, they were hard as a rock and chewy (hard to believe right). Did I do something wrong? Are these only to be enjoyed fresh?

    Thanks!!

Is it alright to put the seasoning on the chips before putting them in the oven or even, applying the seasoning then going in for one last bake with the chips covered?

Also, I wanted to know if using canola or olive oil was a strict rule or if something else like coconut oil would be okay as well.

My apologies if I missed anything, I sort of have a habit of skimming through these things especially because I’m in the habit of wanting to add in my own substitutions if applicable.

    Thanks again

Super excited to try these for my daughter who is on a very restrictive diet and hates missing out on “regular” (but full of nasty stuff) food. Any suggestion for what to use in place of corn tortillas? My daughter can’t do corn or gluten. I’ve been making my own gluten free burritos but they’re not that impressive so I’m not sure how they’d do baking after I do them on the stovetop. Could I use a store bought tortilla chip (they’re quinoa and rice) and add seasoning to them? Thanks for any help!
